Through all of his gifts, Kai was tormented as a child, he tormented himself due to the fact his parents were killed while off on missions. Through rigorous training and practice, Kai was conditioned into what he is today.

Also, just pointing this out...
Konoha is not the only village you can be ANBU in, if you wished to be from another village you could still be ANBU rank. I just felt the need to point this out since everyone I see on every forum trying to be ANBU is also trying to be in Konoha. Just a comment^^"
